Statement by juror Megan Rook-Koepsel:
| Julie O’Connor’s piece, “I Start with Fabric and Make the Environment Sing”
felt like a grand gesture.
The setting is so vast and yet so empty and intimate. The narrative possibilities
this piece opened up kept me looking trying to parse the meaning and ultimately I felt I was meant to sit in a state of ambiguity.
I loved the composition of this piece. The figure’s expressive gesture, the flattened background and the stone patio that abruptly stops without giving us any hint of what is around. All added to a sense of ambiguity.
I love when I leave an artwork and it stays with me, and this was one of those.
